THE MISSION OF THE SOCIETY

Help those in the North Texas area become part of the Long Gray Line

Help graduates continue their lifetime of service to the nation

ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The West Point Society of North Texas is more than 1,400 strong with approximately 1,200 graduates, plus another 200 or so parents of current and past cadets, as well as “Friends of West Point.” Founded over 60 years ago, the Society has received the coveted Distinguished Society honor for each year since the West Point Association of Graduated (AOG) has evaluated its’ now 100+ Societies world-wide and began awarding that honor.

We are a not-for-profit, non-politically-oriented 501 c 3 organization which focuses on fellowship of graduates and supporting admissions of area High School students to the West Point Prep School and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

More than 30 graduates and volunteers serve in the West Point Admissions Filed Force, assisting the Admissions Office in its mission. In the 12 U.S. Congressional Districts in North Texas, the team has enabled between 39 to 53 young people each year to receive appointments to West Point.

Annual Programs

Society fellowship opportunities range from the annual Founders Day Dinner, sports programs for members of the community such as flag football, softball, sporting clay tournaments, and golf, managing tailgate parities when Army teams come to the area, and watch parties at local venues for the annual Navy and Air Force football games. Supporting West Point Admissions

Our graduates, as members of the Admissions Field Force, perform the duties previously served by Army Reserve officers and communicate with congressional staffers to support the nomination process for all North Texas area constituents.

Activities the society supports to foster admissions include:

  • Hosting the annual Black and Gold Dinner

  • Attending college nights at area schools

  • Participating in Congressionally-sponsored academy days

  • Serving on selection/advisory boards for nominations

  • Conducting interviews on behalf of the Admissions Office

  • Conducting the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) for those seeking nominations

  • Encouraging young people to pursue nominations, ROTC scholarships, and military service

Candidates should begin preparation their sophomore or junior year. Candidates are assessed based on academics (60%), leadership (30%), and physical (10%).

Academically, standardized testing is a SAT target SAT 650+ and ACT 29 for each category. Evaluation is  “super score” meaning results can be a composite of best results in each category from multiple test scores. Class rank is considered based on the quality of the school (based on number of students attending college), and can be based on actual class standing or using SAT/ACT percentiles. Transcripts are reviewed and assessed to determine if a candidate has the appropriate foundational courses.

Leadership attributes are critical and participation in school/community organizations are considered for all candidates. Student government, especially as a President or participation in Boys or Girls State, are helpful. Scouting, especially Eagle Scout, are likewise highly favorable. Active leadership within JROTC or Civil Air Patrol is a sign of early leadership development. Participation in sports (including as a team captain) are also considered in evaluating leadership.

Physical ability is based solely on the Candidate Fitness Assessment.

Before You Start

Candidates must recieve a nomination as part of the admission process. This gives the Academy the legal right (but not the obligation) to appoint a candidate to the Academy. Nominations can be via service-connected or congressional. Congressional appointments include Congress persons, Senators, and the Vice President.
